Dancing with Bull | Toby O'Brien

Titled BOSS for the first initial of each artist's name, this exhibition brings together three of Cornwall's most established artists with one of its rising new talents.

Richard Ballinger, Jesse Leroy Smith and Volker Stox are joined by Toby O'Brien in this new show of work by four friends who share a passion for "travel, culture, the spirit of our landscape, a love of the ‘alternative', of Clubland, dancing, Indie music and strange beauty". 

The show revolves around a collection of paintings made by Volker Stox in Berlin in the early 1980s, a time and place now documented as a moment of ‘Fierce Painting' and ‘Wild Youth'. Volker and his friends would hang out at Berlin's Dschungel Club and Cafe Einstein with people like music legend David Bowie and filmmaker George Stamkoski, and paint to a soundtrack of New Order and Joy Division. In contrast, new artist Toby O'Brien only began painting in 2016, quickly establishing himself as an important new talent with the success of his 2018 exhibition Lovers. Jesse Leroy Smith is known as one of West Cornwall's most influential painters and collaborative artists and has been the driving force behind many of the South West's biggest art shows, while artist Richard Ballinger is respected as both a curator and a painter of exceptional still lifes and landscapes.

By bringing together the work of four such diverse, but ethically aligned artists, this show promises a thrilling survey of mutual influence, male friendship and unique shared histories.
