Local author tops ‘Amazon Bestseller' lists within seven hours of launching first book

Acclaimed East Yorkshire hypnotherapist Sheila Granger has topped the ‘Amazon Bestseller' charts in three categories in the first week since launching her first book - ‘No More Diets: Discover a healthier better you'.

Released on Thursday, the book became a best seller within seven hours, ranking 21stin the ‘Weight Control and Nutrition' category, fourth in the Sports Training & Coaching section and 16thin Complementary Medicine. It was the online retailer's 326thbest-selling book across all categories on that day and ranked just two places behind international bestseller ‘The Chimp Paradox' in the Sports Training & Coaching list.

The book introduces readers to Sheila's pioneering ‘Virtual Gastric Band' (VGB) weight management technique, which has already helped thousands of people worldwide shed thousands of pounds through her powerful network of accredited practitioners globally. The Kindle edition of ‘No more diets!' is due out this week.

Of the book's success so far, Sheila said: "I'm absolutely delighted at the reception it has had.

"My mission in life is to make hypnotherapy mainstream so that more people have the opportunity to benefit from the power of this alternative form of treatment and it has been my aim for a while to write a book that makes it more accessible.

"I've had some wonderful feedback thus far and I'm looking forward to hearing more about how this introduction to VGB has helped people break the destructive cycle of yo-yo dieting fads."

Anlaby-based Sheila, who has recently won the ‘Hypnotherapist of the Year' award from the International Association of Counsellors and Therapists, has built a phenomenally-successful global business focused both on delivering therapy and training more than 2,500 practitioners worldwide in her groundbreaking methods. Her VGB is her best-known invention.

She added: "My VGB methods have been used by accredited hypnotherapists across the globe to help thousands of people successfully manage their weight. My new book gives readers a deeper understanding of their own eating issues and an insight into how my VGB programme can help tackle them."

The book looks at the different types of overeating that Sheila's clients have experienced as well as their root causes, and explains how her VGB programme works to reset ingrained behaviours. Plenty of interactive exercises support the reader along their journey to identifying and understanding their eating habits, and the book features links to useful downloads and further information.

People participating in the VGB programme are encouraged to eat three square meals a day and there is no obligation to step on the scales at any point.

"I pioneered this therapy in the UK because I wanted to change the narrative about diet and weight loss," Sheila added. "I wanted to get people thinking about outcomes rather than the diet itself and I wanted them to believe it is possible to get to where they want to be in a way that actually lasts.

"It's called VGB therapy because it has the same physical impact on what you eat as bariatric surgery, but it is achieved by changing your mindset, not rearranging your digestive system."

Sheila believes that most weight problems don't actually lie in food at all. She said: "They stem from an unhelpful mindset, which leads to people eating the wrong things. I have seen hundreds of clients with this issue. Most have tried traditional diets and seen their weight yo-yo backwards and forwards for years. Diets only deal with the physical results of our over-indulgence and don't change how we think, so they don't address the real problem."

Her VGB increases a person's awareness of their food, drink and activity habits, helping them to take control and stamp out the things causing their health problems. Sheila added: "It's a popular misconception that practitioners like me place people into a trance to make them do things. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Most of us spend most of each day in a trance-like state. What hypnosis helps us do is break out of that subconscious state and take more conscious control of what our minds are making us do.

"As a clinical hypnotherapist, I am very aware of the power our minds have to influence our bodies, both positively and negatively. Using these techniques, we can make sure our minds are working in our best interests, rather than against us."

Sheila regularly tours the world, contributing ideas to the development of hypnotherapy practice. Her business is called ‘Believe, by Sheila Granger' because she believes that with help, people can change any aspect of their lives for the better, from poor eating behaviour to phobia management and self-confidence.

This isn't so much a self-help book as the first stepping stone towards someone understanding root causes and switching their mindset. Sheila added: "I strongly believe that the best way of kicking a bad habit is with the help of an expert practitioner who can handhold someone through the process, backing up the inspiration within the book's pages with therapies appropriate to their needs and progress so far."

That's why, throughout the book, readers will find signposts to help them find one of Sheila's expert practitioners in their area of the world, who will be happy to fulfil that role.
