Yorkshire businesses collaborate to deliver landmark Chelsea garden

A landmark Chelsea garden has come to fruition thanks to the generosity of Yorkshire and Northern businesses.

Yorkshire artists Zosia Berkieta-Lewis and Laura Slater were invited to recreate their LAND installation for the Chelsea Flower Show by RHS officials who saw the garden and textile installation at the 2018 London Design Festival.

A collaboration between Wakefield textile designer Laura and founder of botanical studio The Plant Room, Zosia, from Saltaire, LAND is a multi-sensory installation space based on the concept that nature inspires creativity and increases wellbeing.

The installation has only been made possible because of the donations made by the following Northern businesses

  • Plant partner, Tong Garden Centre, Bradford
  • Garden mentor, Katie Rushworth, Ilkley
  • Build and timber partner, BSW/ IRO, Earlston
  • Handcrafted furniture collaborator, Galvin Brothers, Beverley
  • Drinks sponsor, Northern Monk, Leeds
  • Paper sponsor, GF Smith, Hull
  • Print sponsor, Pressision, Leeds
  • Branding and design collaborator, The Archipelago, Leeds
  • Photography, Jo Crawford, Otley
  • Videography, Zoe East, Leeds
  • Design collaborator, Nicola Moxon, Harrogate
  • Soundscape collaborator, Alice Gilmour, Bradford
  • Scent collaborator, Essence + Alchemy, Sheffield
  • Pottery collaborator, Pottery West, Sheffield
  • Art supplies sponsor, Fred Aldous, Leeds

Commenting on the donations, Mrs Berkieta-Lewis said: "The LAND project is a showcase of the great design and independent creative practice in the North of England. Expanding on our initial installation at the London Design Festival, we are collaborating with a number of different emerging designers, makers, creatives and independent businesses in the north.

"The space is designed to allow visitors to feel at ease with pausing. Unlike other gardens at Chelsea, people are invited into the garden and there will be seating and materials for people who would like to draw, inspired by the indigenous soft grasses and colour pops that bring the two practices of textile and botanical design together."

In addition to plants and textiles, LAND at Chelsea will feature sounds specially curated by Yorkshire sound artist, Alice Gilmour that will help people to focus when drawing and relaxing, plus pockets of a bespoke blend of natural essential oils from Essence + Alchemy that reflect the botanicals found in the Scottish landscape that inspired Laura's textile designs.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show takes place in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London from 21 - 25 May.
