Trio launches business club with a difference

Three East Yorkshire businesses have partnered up to launch a new type of business club, and business people around the region are invited to attend its second pilot event in May.

Wellbeing in business is something close to the hearts of staff at James Legal, one of East Yorkshire’s leading law firms. It’s something the team are actively championing as part of their InspiringBusiness2019 campaign, and now they are taking it a step further by joining forces with two other forward-thinking businesses – who are also IB19 partners – to launch a new Wellbeing and Business Club.

Tony Bowler, founder of The Business Culture Hull premier business club, and Sheila Granger, the Anlaby-based internationally renowned hypnotherapist who has years of experience helping people make positive improvements in their lives, are collaborating in forming the new club.

Nick Miller, Managing Director at James Legal, said: “Our new club met for the first time in April and a second pilot event will now take place in early May. Those who attended the first meeting were hugely positive about the experience and we are now encouraging more business people to ‘join the club’ and come along to the James Legal offices in Hull at 6pm on Tuesday May 7.”

Nick added: “The thing that tends to get overlooked the most among business owners and particularly self-employed people is their own wellbeing. They often spend so much time and effort building their business and looking after their staff, they forget to look after their own mind and body, and this can have a hugely detrimental effect on them both in life and work.

“Our Wellbeing and Business Club offers a supportive forum where people can gather informally and take a little bit of time out to focus on looking after themselves as well as their business.

“Everyone who came along to our first pilot event in April felt very uplifted and encouraged by the experience, which showed that they are not alone in any business challenges they are experiencing and there is support out there.”

The club will give attendees a chance to meet once a month to share information and advice, discuss issues, and hear talks on mindfulness and other relevant topics. Both Sheila and Tony have valuable insight into getting the work/life balance right through their own personal experiences, and regularly meet people seeking to achieve what sometimes seems like the impossible.

Tony said: “It’s a common theme among the businesspeople I know through The Business Culture Hull. Juggling all the stresses and strains of running a business with your personal life and own health, physical and mental, isn’t easy.

“That’s why we came up with the idea for this club. There are plenty of business networking groups out there already, but none that really focus on wellbeing and mental health.”

Sheila said: “This club is going to be an amazing opportunity for local businesspeople. More and more people are recognising the importance of mindfulness in business, and by making this the focus of our meetings we can ensure everyone gets a helping hand in managing their own wellbeing.

“I often give talks on how the mind works and what we can do to improve things, and have helped many clients on an individual basis. Our mind and body are all part of the same system, and sometimes we need just need some support to learn how to take better care of them.”

The new club will meet on Tuesday May 7, 6pm to 7.30pm, at the James Legal offices at Planet House, 2 Woodhouse Street, Hedon Road, Hull HU9 1RJ. This session is free to attend.

People are invited to register for the event now at Eventbrite.

The InspiringBusiness2019 campaign

First launched in 2017 as James Legal’s way of contributing to the vibrancy of the Yorkshire and Humber corporate community, its InspiringBusiness series has so far brought together hundreds of professional people to hear the personal stories of some of the region’s most inspiring ones, as well as offering one lucky business per year a support package worth over £20,000.

And this year it is building on that, with a wellbeing theme designed to help those taking part achieve a better work/life balance.

Nick Miller, Solicitor and Managing Director of James Legal, which has offices in Hull and Beverley, said: “Many of the speakers we have lined up for this year’s seminars have powerful insights into things like mindfulness, physical fitness and nutrition, which we hope will help those involved become not just more successful, but happier too.”

This year, another six partners are joining forces – cbaSadofskys Chartered Accountants; The Business Culture Hull; Peacock Finance; Mobius; Sheila Granger, and Peak Health & Fitness Gymnasium – to offer a prize package worth more than £20,000.

Nick added: “The reason we hold this campaign is because we want to inspire and connect local businesses and business people, we believe in giving back and supporting our local community.

“We’re delighted to be embarking on the third year of the campaign. The talent we’ve unearthed through this competition is remarkable, as are the inspirational stories we’ve heard from our speakers, and the connections that have been made among the businesses that have participated.”

The first seminar of 2019 took place in early March, where the winner of the InspiringBusiness2018 competition – pioneering Hull company BIMsense – was announced. BIMsense was formed in 2016 by a chartered engineer and a bricklayer who had a burning desire to change the way buildings are designed, built and managed using a revolutionary new process of ‘building information modelling’ (BIM) digital solutions.

BIMsense Co-founder Scott Pilgrim said: “We’re really thrilled to be chosen as winners. Our business development will require a lot of support so every element of the prize will be incredibly useful. We’re very much looking forward to working with all the partners.”
