A Wedding in the Family - new book out Feb 14th for Mums of the Bride/Groom

Good afternoon,

In our continued relationship supporting leading psychology and health publisher Free Association Books, we're proud to be supporting the launch of A Wedding in the Family by Annette Byford, due for release on Valentine's Day. While the majority of weddings happen in summer, an estimated 100,000 proposals were predicted for the 2018 Christmas period, according to Bridebook.co.uk. Christmas Day in particular is a very popular day for marriage proposals, so this book comes at a perfect time. A Wedding in the Family is an accessible, information-packed, psychological analysis of the phenomenon of weddings focusing on the role of the ‘mother of the bride/groom' and the evolving family dynamics. Written by a chartered counselling psychologist and senior practitioner on the Register of Psychologists, prompted by personal experience of being ‘mother of the bride' or ‘mother of the groom' for the first time, the author is keen to point out that it's virtually impossible to totally eliminate stress from the engagement-preparations-big day itself, but it is possible to better understand what your role is, what you can do to help yourself navigate this time of change, and enjoy much of the process!

We have copies as PDFs and paperbacks to offer in advance for review/consideration. We can arrange for extracts, editorial by the author, comments, Q&As etc. Annette Byford lives in Southampton and can be available for interview but it will need to be arranged with us as she runs a very busy clinical practice.

Thanks so much,

A Wedding In The Familyoffers readers an accessible psychological analysis of the wedding phenomenon focusing on the often complex relationship between mother and adult son/daughter. Up until now, information about this sensitive subject has typically either been academic or straightforward, self-help style advice. Annette felt there was a gap in the market for a systematic exploration from a more balance, psychological perspective. To fill the void, Annette drew on her extensive psychologist and psychotherapist career to conduct more than 30 interviews with mothers on their child's wedding journey.

She also reflected on her feelings and experiences of being the mother of the bride and how that had unexpectedly affected her. The book is structured around the three pivotal stages of a wedding: the engagement announcement, the wedding preparations, and the big day itself. The result is a rare and raw insight into the wedding experience from the point of view of the mothers interviewed. Annette candidly explores the complexities of family relationships that this rite of passage can expose. She also touches on how personal circumstances and emotions from the past can bubble over into the now - with the wedding being a trigger. This new book will not be able to eliminate the inevitable wedding stress, but instead help readers to make sense of what is happening around them, so they can move forward in a positive way.

The qualitative analysis of interview material gives the book an extra layer and moves it into the realms of family and analytic therapy, making it of potential interest to professionals such as psychotherapists and counsellors. Care has been taken to couple analysis with a comprehensible style.
