Tremco MMA Rapid Cure of primary importance to Bluewater car park refurbishment programme

A London-based building maintenance specialist is employing theMMA Rapid Cure systemas well as large quantities of high performance construction movement joints, from the TREMCO and Migua ranges manufactured by tremco illbruck, for an extended programme of works at theBluewater Shopping and Leisure Centrein Kent.

The work on the Yellow, Green and Red car parks at the hugely popular retail and leisure destination is being carried out byHilton Abbey, direct for Bluewater's management company. Having installed some 32,000 square metres of the MMA this year alone, the company is due to continue the contract next year when its operatives will move onto the Thames car park.

Managing Director, Gary Hilton, commented:  "We have used the MMA system extensively over the years for a variety of large projects, and are always confident of the performance. TREMCO's technical team has been involved throughout, not just assisting with the inspections and specification, but also carrying out regular slip tests and pull-out strength tests, all of which have exceeded the required standard.

"The original joints in the car park decks are being replaced to ensure longevity. The joints are being dug out and prepared before the new sections of FP 90 profiles are bolted in position within the stepped concrete, on a bed of resin-based mortar."

The current contract has seen Hilton Abbey install some 2,000 linear metres of the Migutan FP 90 construction joints which, crucially, have been specifically developed for incorporation into bituminous or similar surface build-ups and are fully watertight. Their design includes long side sheets to ensure their integration into the car park wearing layers, while striated stainless steel cappings offer skid resistance for vehicles.

The Project Manager for Bluewater SC Management, Keith Williams, confirmed: "Bluewater will be 20 years old next year, so there are maintenance and improvements that are being undertaken within the car parks and walkways, which Hilton Abbey is undertaking for us.

"The three year project is part of our long-term maintenance programme, and the original decision to specify the MMA system goes back to 2015. Not only does the system come highly recommended, but it went through a number of checks on its performance parameters, including a full pilot trial. This has happened in discussion with Land Securities, the part owners and management company of Bluewater. We have completed three car parks to date and will tackle the Thames Car Park next year."

After track-blasting, each area of the car park deck is primed before theTREMCO CP360 MMA flexible membraneis applied, with its very rapid curing characteristics making it ideal for use in the UK's variable climate. This is followed by theTREMCO CP215 MMA flexible basecoatand special fleece reinforcement where required. This build up is then over-coated using theTREMCO CP930 MMA waterproof sealerin the desired colour.
