Outsourcing enables construction firm             to focus on growth

A construction company that specialises in floor screed applications is celebrating fourfold growth after outsourcing its accounting and finance requirements to Howards Chartered Certified Accountants.


Midlands Floor Screeding is involved in all types of floor screed applications, including fast drying screed, flowing and traditional screed specifications. It took the decision to outsource in 2014 so that managing director Liane Dewsbury could channel her energies into growing the business rather than dealing with day-to-day administration. 


The company employs a core team of experienced staff and during busy periods, or when engaged on larger contracts, can call on extra resources using dedicated teams of loyal sub-contractors.


Liane says: "Sorting out the payroll, both CIS and PAYE, as well as our tax and VAT, was proving to be very time consuming. Outsourcing this element of our business has enabled us to focus on getting the most out of being a Constructionline member and on responding to more tenders from major contractors, especially since for large contracts we must ensure that all our sub-contractors meet the requirements of the Contractors Health and Safety Scheme (CHAS)."


Matthew Bailey, managing director of Stafford-based Howards, says: "After four years of high growth the good news is that, thanks to its flexibility and the calibre of its resource, Midlands Floor Screeding is continuing to expand.


"Our aim is to provide the business with the right kind of support to move forward and as a multi-disciplined practice we ensure that Liane has hands-on support all in one place."


Howards also provides Midlands Floor Screeding with general business consultancy and finance advice and Liane says it is reassuring to know that, when there are major decisions to make, she can rely on the Howards team to fully understand the financial implications and advise her accordingly. 


Continues Liane: "Working in partnership with Howards has enabled me to concentrate on the core aspects of our business and deliver ongoing growth without increasing back-office costs. 


"Off the back of a strong performance in an often difficult trading environment we're now looking to recruit another person for our in-house team so that we can tender for more projects and enhance customer support whilst continuing to run a very streamlined operation."
