Yorkshire’s first malt whisky distillery wins twice at Yorkshire Whisky Festival

Yorkshire's first malt whisky distillery's double wins at Yorkshire Whisky Festival

The team at Yorkshire's first whisky distillery are celebrating after winning two awards at the Yorkshire Whisky Festival.

Filey based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, whose single malt whisky will be available next summer after maturing for three years, was awarded Dram of the Day and Stand of the Day at the recent festival thatattracts distillers from as far afield as Taiwan, India, Japan and the USA. Both awards were voted for by visitors to the festival.

Of the accolades, Spirit of Yorkshire's Whisky Director, Joe Clark said:"There was an amazing array of whiskies on show, so to scoop the dram of the day is a great achievement and testament to everyone at the distillery."

Eddie Ludlow, from festival organisers The Whisky Lounge, said: "Spirit of Yorkshire's 'Maturing Malt 003' was extremely popular amongst the crowd on Saturday, meaning a ‘not-quite-whisky' won this award for the first time."

Limited to 2000 bottles, Spirit of Yorkshire's Maturing Malt DP003 offers a taste of the distillery's maturingspirit and isdescribed as ‘soft, creamy and sweet, with notes of milk chocolate, stoned fruits, pink wafer biscuits and orange zest.'

The latest in the limited edition maturing malts, DP004, is available to pre-order from 26th  October.

Spirit of Yorkshire was launched in 2016 and is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor from Wold Top Brewery and business partner, David Thompson. The pair have invested significantly to follow their dream of creating a Yorkshire whisky that doesn't simply replicate Scotch. The distillery is a true field to bottle setup and boasts some of the most impressive distilling equipment in the country, includingtwo of the largest Forsyth pot stills operating in the UK outside of Scotland.
