Power of the human mind wins health battles

Dr Mosely demonstrated the ‘power of the mind' with placebo trials on BBC TV's Horizon and leadership and NLP coach Jenni Hallam reveals how she overcame her own illness when bedridden in hospital and told by doctors she would not walk again.

Primary school teacher, Jenni Hallam, was once so immobile that firemen had to lift her to hospital when she developed adult meningitis and a lumbar puncture caused a rare bacterial infection that travelled into her spine, needing metal plates.

Yearning for knowledge from every self-help book that her friends brought to her hospital bedside, she turned her life around when she read a book with the question ‘what would youdowith your life if you had a million pounds?'

Her vision was a passion to help women to re-energise, rejuvenate and regenerate by building a retreat centre on a Greek island to help those affected by life's "stuff".  Her friends translated this into becoming a coach to help others and she went on to train to Master Practitioner level in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

As she began to imagine her recovery and visualise herself back in the gym she overcame her own illness and began a life-changing career helping others as a leadership coach running "emotionally charged" workshops to hear people's stories and help them to speak their own truth. Jenni is a strong believer that if the mind is willing then anything is possible.

In her personal life she had also stayed in her marriage for too long but had grown the mental toughness and developed the coping strategies to literally change her whole life.

She had also suffered at school from bullies who victimised her for creasing a piece of their work and had ‘put her on trial by standing her on a concrete block' to find her guilty until the whole class humiliated and shunned her.  She had constantly yearned for friends, her grades had dropped badly and she was desperately miserable but always believed in speaking the truth.

"I truly believe my experiences changed the whole course of my own life to go on and help others change their own. I became a leadership coach to help businesses and individuals with their emotions in their careers and home lives and to cope with transition and personal change to create the best lives they want and really deserve. So many people are stuck in dead-end relationships and jobs they hate too afraid of change and no confidence to take those risks."  Jenni Hallam

Her skills can help you build confidence, be positive role models for your children and to function better by changing your work/life balance into looking after yourselves with set aside ‘me time' and to change your life.  Emotional resilience and mental toughness training are a key part of her therapy and NLP programmes.

The lesson is not to sabotage yourself doing what someone else wants you to do or what you think you ought to do but to really listen to your gut instinct and use the power of your incredible brain and own mind to find your own truth and to follow your purpose, passions and ethos.

Notes to editors:

NLP is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California.  They believe there is a connection between neurological processes (neuro-) language (linguisitic) and behavioural patterns learned through programming ((programming) and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life.
