MK doctor ‘honoured' to win award

A CNWL Consultant Community Paediatrician has won a prestigious Milton Keynes award.

Dr Chinwe Osuchukwu has picked up the coveted Outstanding Contribution Award in this year's Women Leaders MK Awards. She had been nominated in the Professional Services category, but judges decided her work towards Milton Keynes merited the outstanding award.

Dr Osuchukwu, who specialises in the care of children with complex, neuro developmental needs, said: "The Outstanding award Contribution is awarded to an individual who has been highly influential and has significantly contributed to the community of Milton Keynes so this is a real honour and a humbling experience for me.

"It couldn't have been possible without all the staff support from CNWL and a team effort. Thank you all. This can only make me strive to deliver even more for CNWL, Milton Keynes, the UK and the world at large.

"I dedicate this award to all workers who work tirelessly across CNWL, UK and the globe to ensure that we can provide easy-to-access education and training for all and that we bridge inequality."

Dr Osuchukwu had been nominated for two main reasons.

Firstly, in helping her department see patients quicker by reorganising the skill mix within the team so staff were able to do more but quicker, even though the team remained the same size. The waiting time for assessment is now significantly below the national six month standard and means this group of children are able to get the support they need more quickly.

Secondly, for making sure that medical education standards within CNWL Milton Keynes remain high through her role of Acting Deputy Director of Medical Education (Milton Keynes).

Dr Osuchukwu is also the Oxford representative for the British Academy of Childhood Disability, through which she conducts research; is a Trustee of the overseas disability charity - the Christian Blind Mission and is actively involved in helping out at Winter Night Shelter Milton Keynes - this year she is coordinating one of the centres - and served as international chair for the Rotary Club of the Brickhills, co-ordinating its international activities.

Alongside this she is a mother to three children.

Dr Osuchukwu was nominated by her predecessor and colleague Dr Haido Vlachos - now Associate Dean - Professional Support at Health Education England.

Women Leaders MK is a prestigious awards event that recognises the talents and achievements of women living or working in the Milton Keynes postcode area.
