Yorkshire’s first whisky distillery shortlisted for two regional awards

Yorkshire's first whisky distillery shortlisted fortwo regional awards

The team at Yorkshire's first Whisky Distillery are celebrating after reaching the final of two regional awards.

Hunmanby based Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery has been shortlisted in the Small Business Category of the Chamber Bridlington and Yorkshire Coast Business Awards and has also reached the final in the Rural Tourist Attraction category of the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards.

In the Chamber awards, the Distillery faces competition from vintage shoes and clothing business, Angelabare and KD Recruitment. The winners will be announced at a black tie ceremony at Bridlington Spa on 19thOctober.

Spirit of Yorkshire's co-founder and director, David Thompson is delighted to have been shortlisted: "Both of these are prestigious local awards and we're very proud to have reached the final.

"Our tourist attraction has only been open just over a year, so we're over the moon to have been shortlisted in the Rural Tourist Attraction of the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards and are looking forward to the awards event in Harrogate on 11thOctober."

Spirit of Yorkshire was launched in 2016 and is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor from Wold Top Brewery and business partner, David Thompson. The pair have invested significantly to follow their dream of creating a Yorkshire whisky that doesn't simply replicate Scotch. The distillery is a true field to bottle setup and boasts some of the most impressive distilling equipment in the country, includingtwo of the largest Forsyth pot stills operating in the UK outside of Scotland. It is thought to be the only distillery operating in the UK that grows all of its own barley for its whisky production.

The team at Spirit of Yorkshire identifies with the fearless, graceful and purposeful birds that have prospered at nearby Bempton Cliffs for many years. In the same way that the gannets have a homing instinct, wherever the team roam to explore new ideas, they will always return to where Yorkshire's first whisky was born.
