The outdoor kitchen business is evolving as consumers look for a high quality, permanent outdoor cooking solution. Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association member and outdoor kitchen specialist, Beefeater, looks at what to consider when planning an outdoor kitchen.

  • What space do you have available and does that space lend itself to a linear construction or will it be better suited as a corner unit or island?

  • Does the kitchen need to blend with existing stonework / render or is the desired look one that will contrast and stand out?

  • What elements of the kitchen are required in the outdoor cooking space from the traditional elements of hot, cold, wet and dry areas? Of course, the BBQ (hot) and preparation area (dry) are wanted but do you also want refrigeration (cold) and water supply (wet)?

  • What kind of storage space is required? Doors and drawers in many shapes and sizes are available but what mix between cladding or render and cabinetry is desirable?

  • Is the outdoor kitchen in a partially covered area? If so, ventilation or extraction may be required.

  • Are there adequate services available for the scheme? Electricity, gas (assuming house gas is preferred) and water supply need to be considered.

  • Budget! A basic outdoor kitchen with a decent barbecue and a couple of cupboards can be bought for less than £2,000 while some installations could cost much more.

  • How will the scheme fit in to existing outdoor living accessories - proximity to dining area or construction of seating in the scheme (i.e. bar table and stools)?

  • Is it just gas cooking that is required or does the scheme need charcoal / solid fuel included?
