This autumn New Craftsman Gallery St Ives presents and exhibition of paintings by Colin Orchard, alongside a collection of new work by ceramicist Tanya Gomez.

Colin Orchard is a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and one of Cornwall's most respected painters. Typically an oil on board artist who crops his paintings into strong compositions once they are finished, this collection showcases Orchard's recent involvement with canvas, which requires him to define his compositions at the start of each work. In addition to this change, developments in his use of tone and colour may well have been affected by two recent cataract operations, making for what the artist describes as ‘interesting results'. Divided equally into board and canvas works, this exhibition returns to Orchard's favourite subjects of Venice, Suffolk and Cornwall, as well as potent scenes of people in art gallery spaces.

Tanya Gomez's new collection goes beyond her longstanding focus on the sea, towards an exploration of the textures of ice and rock. Based in Lewes and inspired by the soaring cliffs of Lewes Downs, she presses flint and found stones into the surface of her works to mimic natural texture, and adds slip to exaggerate shape. Through a process of cutting away and layering heavily on top in Chun and Celadon glazes, other works explore a narrative of melting ice and climate change, suggesting the fragile detail of fissures and glacial patterns on vessels whose bases are narrowed, as if eroded by water.
