NewVIc Student Union shortlisted for NUS award

NewVIc Student Union has been shortlisted for the prestigious Representation andCampaigning Award by the National Union of Students (NUS).

It is the only sixth form college in the country to be shortlisted.

It is ahuge achievementto be shortlisted, particularly as this is thefirst year ever that NewVIc Student Union has applied for the award.

Out of 58 applications, only 8 have been shortlisted for the award.  The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted at theBirmingham NEC on the 4thJuly 2018.

Newham Sixth Form College Student Union was shortlisted for their work around the anti-hate crime campaign and also their great representation in SU Elections and Council.

The students worked in partnership with the University of East London and The East London Citizens Organisation (TELCO) and were trained on how to deliver training sessions to build awareness of hate crime to tutors and students.  They alsodeveloped an anti-hate crime proposalwhich was presented at the Youth Assembly and hustings with the Newham mayoral candidates in March earlier this year.  The proposalwas accepted by Cllr Rokhsana Fiazwho, upon her recent election as Newham Mayor, now has the opportunity to put in place.   The students' work demonstrates a successful partnership between a university and community organisation.

The Student Union at NewVIc is highly successful and has beenrecognised as receiving the largest proportional voter turn-out out of all other Student Unions across the country.  The Student Union is an important part of the NewVIc student leadership programme as it allows students to be a part of the college's consultation process at an institutional level. The high number of NewVIc students participating in Student Union elections demonstrates the success of NewVIc's leadership programmes and fully inclusive ethos.

"I feel honoured to be nominated for this award.  We worked really hard to prepare a presentation about anti-hate crime.  We executed the presentation in front all the students of the college which helped in changing the mindset of certain individuals.  I feel proud to have made a positive change in society."

Hanson Fernandes - Student Union Executive Officer
