North Kensington's Joanna wins staff award

CNWL's annual staff awards, the Gems, took place at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Great Queen Street.

It was a night that celebrated the achievements of the Trust's staff, showcasing their hard work and commitment.

The gongs handed out on the night included Team of the Year, Project of the Year, Compassion, Respect, Empowerment and Employee of the Year amongst others. The winner of that award was Joanna Hahessy, a Peer Support Worker for the North Kensington Community Mental Health Team.

Joanna was one of three shortlisted staff - who won a Hidden Gem over the last year - an award given to staff members who always go the extra mile and consistently work towards CNWL's core values. Joanna's citation for the Employee of the Year award read:  "Demonstrating that although sometimes difficult, living with a mental illness doesn't mean you spend the rest of your life tied to mental health services. Joanna offered hope and compassion to everyone, once you recover as well as you possibly can, you can take charge of your health both physical and mental health and make positive choices for your own well-being.

"Joanna introduced partnership working through her group programme that she developed, inviting non-statutory services to clients and staff to demonstrate what else is accessible outside of Pall Mall and mental health services.

"She contributes and appropriately challenges the Multi-Disciplinary Team's thinking around treatment by using her personal experience of accessing mental health services.

"Every team should have a Joanna, a credit to the peer support movement in the trust."

Joanna, who has worked for the Trust for two-and-a-half years, said of her win: "I'm so proud to have received this award. It means so much to me and demonstrates the importance that CNWL attaches to lived experience. It's important to me that services are developed around the service user and I'm grateful that my insight is seen as helpful this this respect.

"If service users can take anything away from my award, it's that I'm proof that you can recover and live a full life."
