Ashford's helping to create a ‘Forest of Thoughts'

Ashford's helping to create a ‘Forest of Thoughts'

Media release

08 June 2018

The ‘memory tree' initiative to promote awareness of dementia, organised by Ashford and Canterbury Dementia Action Alliance (ACDAA), Ashford Borough Council and the One You shop continues into June.

The hand crafted memory tree can be found within the One You shop in Ashford town centre, which is near to the tank memorial and visitors are invited to write special memories onto printed leaves before attaching them to the tree.

In one of her first engagements as the newly-elected Mayor of Ashford, Cllr Mrs Jessamy Blanford visited the One You shop on Wednesday 23 May to include her special memory.

The Mayor said: "The memory tree initiative is an excellent way to promote awareness of dementia during Dementia Action Week 2018. I was honoured to be asked to take part and place my own memory on the tree. It is wonderful to hear that the memory tree's stay at the One You shop has been extended beyond Dementia Action Week 2018 as this means more people will have a chance to visit and place their own special memories on the tree."

The Kent Dementia Alliance, which is made up of a group of Kent organisations who work together to better meet the needs of people with dementia (ACDAA being one), is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. The traditional anniversary theme for five years is ‘wood', so when all the memory trees are brought together from across the county, a ‘Forest of Thoughts' will be created.

Please share your memories and visit the One You shop, which is located in Park Mall shopping centre (near the tank memorial) and is open 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday and 9am to 1pm, Saturday. The One You shop provides services including stop smoking support, healthy weight advice for adults and children, on-the-spot blood pressure checks, a weigh-in service and support and advice on a range of lifestyle issues.
