Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 14-18: an interview with photographer Mike St Maur Sheil

Media Release

21 May 2018

As we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War, Ashford in Kent is reflecting on its connection to the war, plans have been made to commemorate this significant historical event.

One of the events that will define Ashford's commemoration is the Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 14-18 open air photographic exhibition. A captivating exploration of the lasting effects of the war via the battlefields it took place on, this unique exhibition is a perfect way to bring the past into the present and unite the community in remembering not just the people involved in the conflict, but the places it affected too.

Captured by renowned international photographer, Mike St Maur Sheil, Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace encapsulates the thought provoking ‘beauty' of the battlefields; each image a haunting reminder that no matter how peaceful those places may look now 100 years later, the scars of war lie just below the surface.

Ahead of the exhibition's arrival on the 3rd of June, we caught up with Mike to ask him why he thinks it's been such a resounding success so far, and what the people of Ashford can take away from visiting the exhibition.

"I'm delighted that the exhibition is coming to Ashford and the support it's received from the residents here. I hope the people in Ashford will see what they've created by bringing the exhibition here and that the concept of it will resonate. I'm incredibly grateful for all the support." Mike said.
