Media Release
The Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace 14-18 photographic exhibition has been officially launched.
Opening on Monday 30th April at London's Guildhall, the photographic exhibition is a tribute to all those who took part in, or were affected by, the First World War.
Following its London debut, the exhibition - which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War- will arrive in Ashford and be open for public viewing during June in the town centre's Memorial Gardens. It will be officially opened by Ashford's Mayor, Cllr Jessamy Blanford, on Sunday 3rd June.
Developed by renowned photographer Mike Sheil, the exhibition was launched in London by the Lady Mayoress - Samantha Bowman - of the City of London. Around 150 people attended the evening, including an Ashford contingent, headed up by the Council's Leader, Cllr Gerry Clarkson CBE.
Ashford was thanked for its sponsorship, which enabled the exhibition to take place. Cllr Clarkson commented: "This is an exhibition of immense power - remembering and honouring all those who tragically lost their lives in the First World War - and those who were affected by it. The war was more far-reaching than most of us imagine, and the exhibition has a dedicated Ashford section which demonstrates how local places were used and local people were employed - and how they were affected.
"Together with the other displays, activities and talks, there is something for everyone, and I urge you to visit the Memorial Gardens in June and to see this poignant exhibition."
While in Ashford, the exhibition will be free to view during the opening hours of the Memorial Gardens and will be accompanied by a programme of other displays, activities and talks*.
Following its showing here, it will then travel on to be displayed in Worcester, Winchester and Edinburgh, before returning to London.
