NewVIc students inspired by Black History Month

NewVIc College celebrated Black History Month throughout October through its social media and two events. Both students and staff worked side by side to make the events entertaining and an educational success.

The first event was Music and the civil rights era which focused the link between music and black identity. Lecturer of History and Government & Politics, Robert Behan took students through a nostalgic journey from gospel to hiphop which explored the connection between the impact of racism and uprising of civil rights.

The final event ‘Be Inspired' was hosted by NewVIc's Learning Support Practitioner Asher Hoyles. An established author and performance poet who has also performed at Clean Break Theatre company, Glastonbury and in prisons, Asher performed a word piece that drew attention to the generation of West Indians that arrived here, their struggles, their legacy and contributions to society.

Former Student Lauren Kaur performed along with staff and current Students proudly presented performances consisting of dance, poetry, word pieces all with the underlying theme of being proud of who they are and where they are from.

Shah Rahman said ‘it was a great month to really listen and learn about each other's cultures, this event would not be possible without the incredibly talented students and staff, who all took time out to make Black History Month spectacular'

Traditional foods were available throughout the event, courtesy of NewVIc College. The evening reluctantly ended with attendees and performers dancing and drumming together.
