While the care sector continues to come under close scrutiny following a series of reports of neglect and abuse, the employment law specialist and health and safety advisor Bibby Consulting & Support has won praise for the services that have helped it become the supplier of choice for care home operators.

Although cases like that of Winterbourne View put the sector in a very poor light, the overwhelming majority of care homes are committed to ensuring their residents live in a safe environment that complies with all the relevant legislation.

Particularly difficult to manage are multi-site homes and Bibby Consulting & Support has been lauded for understanding the specific needs of this sector. A key factor in the company's success has been its recognition that the provision of support for managers and their staff is vital in enabling them to deliver a first-class service to residents.

In a recent survey, just 40 per cent of care home managers said they felt valued and this was making their job stressful. With this in mind, Bibby Consulting & Support helps care home owners support their managers through regular and documented one-on-ones which form part of a complete human resources package. The service also includes a thorough return to work process which enables care home owners to understand why an employee has been off and to identify any signs of work related causes such as stress.

Brett Bernard, operations manager at Select Healthcare, one of Bibby Consulting & Support's top clients in the sector, says: "During the last four years of working together, Bibby Consulting & Support has proven to be a most responsive and supportive business partner with an excellent understanding of the care sector."

And Andrew Mangion, operations director at Carebase, says: "As care providers we understand and appreciate that to deliver consistent positive outcomes for residents and staff, we need assistance in certain specialised areas from a number of 'partners'. Bibby Consulting & Support is such a partner and continues to provide invaluable support, guidance and advice. This in turn ensures we provide safe practice in a safe environment for our residents, staff and visitors."

Another satisfied customer is Sandwell Community Caring Trust which has used Bibby Consulting & Support's health and safety services since November 2011. As well as valuable advice and guidance, this has involved introducing and implementing management systems and carrying out health and safety audits of premises and fire risk assessments.

Says Mim Hall, head of learning and development at Sandwell Community Caring Trust: "We have always found Bibby Consulting & Support to be professional and reliable and they have been proactive in ensuring the service offered is meeting our needs. Any concerns or requirements raised have been addressed effectively and within a timely period."

Michael Slade, Managing Director of Bibby Consulting & Support, comments: "Risk in the care sector is so much higher than in other sectors, not least because of the vulnerability of service users, but with our expertise we can provide valuable support for care home owners. What our customers find most attractive is that we offer the ability to design tailored systems and have top quality people who understand the sector's specific risks."

He adds: "This feedback from our clients is testimony to the fact that we are now the leading supplier of Human Resource and Health & Safety support for the care home sector, something which we are simply delighted with."
