Ford Focus RS is July's Glass's Used Car Hero

Offering superb value at the moment with 305bhp for less than £20,000

The Ford Focus RS has been named as Glass's Used Car Hero for July, offering supercar-rivalling performance at family hatch prices - and with the prospect of long-term classic status.

Each month, Glass's editors hold a meeting to name the current Used Car Hero in the UK market - the model they believe currently offers outstanding value, quality and ability.

Rupert Pontin, director of valuations, said: "The Focus RS put forward by our used car editor Jonathan Brown ticks all the boxes for a Used Car Hero. It is a special car with a cult following that has reasonable running costs and, if properly looked after, will lose little value over the normal course of ownership. If kept in the long term, you could even see values rise.

"Our best buy is the 2009-11 model which, at around £20,000, offers the kind of performance that you would normally have to spend much more to access. The only downside is that the image is a bit overt for some buyers."

Jonathan highlights some key points that make the Ford Focus RS a ‘Hero':

WHY IS THE FOCUS RS A USED CAR HERO?Carrying on from the Escort RS with its cult following, the Focus RS delivers outstanding performance, cast iron residuals and the prospect of having classic status long term.

WHEN WAS IT ON SALE?Two different models from 2002 to 2005 and 2009 to 2011.

WHAT'S GOOD?Decent specification, fantastic handling, excellent braking and outstanding performance for the money. Strong residual values.

WHAT'S BAD?Image can be negative due to aftermarket loud exhausts and accessories.

IDEAL BUY?2009 to 2011 models, offers 305bhp under £20,000.
