NEWS RELEASE: Two of Scotland's National Treasures Link Up for Charity

Two of Scotland’s national treasures link up for charity auction

One of Scotland’s oldest whiskies meets one of Scotland’s favourite sports stars at a fundraiser being held this week in Fife.

A beach rugby event taking place in Elie on Saturday July 23rd will feature a limited edition bottle of Glenturret single malt signed by rugby great Gavin Hastings, as part of a charity auction.

The bottle is numbered 667, which is the number of points Gavin scored for Scotland. The highly collectible 16-year-old malt is part of a batch of just 1740. Called Fly’s 16 Masters Edition, it is the latest in a line of limited edition whisky releases from Glenturret Distillery in Crieff, Scotland’s oldest working distillery.

The free event, which features a game of beach rugby, a barbecue and an after-party, takes place outside The Ship Inn in Elie and is being organised by clothing entrepreneur Henry James who grew up at the East Neuk pub. Henry’s swim shorts brand Henri James, Savills and The Ship Inn are joint organisers.

Proceeds from the auction will go to The Sandpiper Trust, an organization that provides immediate medical care in Scotland, particularly in remote areas, through a standardised medical kit called the Sandpiper Bag.

The Glenturret Fly’s 16 Masters Edition has an interesting ‘tail’ to tale. The label bears an image from 1905 which features 16 if the distillery’s stillmen, along with a collie dog named Fly. The dog was believed to belong to the distillery manager. The photograph was unearthed from the back of a cupboard at the distillery.

Stuart Cassells, General Manager at The Glenturret Distillery, said:

“It seems fitting that our very special Fly’s 16 Masters Edition should be linked to a very special Scot, Gavin Hastings, as well as an extremely worthy charity. Little would those stillmen have known that they would not only inspire their own limited edition malt but be linked to Scotland’s greatest rugby player and, in my opinion, the best fullback in history.”
