The biggest cactus you've ever seen? Now for sale in the UK

Impressive mature living plants can be hard to source, rarely available at garden centres. Big plant specialist Plaza Plants (www.plazaplants.com) recently set up its online store from Bristol’s Spike Island to fill the need, whether you’d like a 100 year-old gnarled mature olive tree, leafy palm or unusual large cactus.

We’re all familiar with cacti but I’d be surprised if you’ve come across one of the recent additions to the Plaza Plants range, the mother-in-law’s cushion. Mother-in-laws are traditionally the butt of jokes in the UK, and this plant has a trick up its sleeve.

With the botanical name of Echinocactus grusonii, the mother-in-law's cushion is a rare species of cactus, originating from east-central Mexico.

Plaza Plants supplies this cactus species in a spectacular large spherical globe shaped like a pouffe cushion at around 3ft wide (90cm) and up to 2ft 11in (90cm) tall. However, anyone sitting on it wouldn’t enjoy the experience due to its strong prickly yellowish spines... ideal to deter your mother-in-law.

They’re ideal for an office setting as they are an eye catching addition, perhaps best situated as a raised feature in a reception or lobby and requiring little care and thriving if enough sunlight is provided. They produce eye-catching yellow flowers mid-summer.

These cacti are very hard to find in the UK at this size and maturity. They’re priced at £999 each plus VAT including delivery, come with a year’s guarantee, and are available from
