FlatSpin - Fourth show to open in Four weeks at Pitlochry Festival Theatre
The summer 2016 season's show openings at Pitlochry Festival Theatre continues unabated as FlatSpin - a fourth show in four weeks, opened on Thursday (16 June, 2pm and 8pm) at the popular Perthshire Playhouse.
Written by Alan Ayckbourn, Britain's greatest living playwright, FlatSpin is part of the Damsels in Distress trilogy which presents 3 completely different modern comedies, but all performed on the same set with the same seven actors (pictured in rehearsal is Gemma McElhinney (foreground) who plays Rosie and Amanda Osborne (background) who plays Edna.
The story:
Rosie, a struggling out of work actress, takes cleaning jobs to pay the bills. Today, it's a swish Docklands apartment she's tackling with the Marigolds, whilst coping with the disappointment of having missed out on a big TV job. And then the doorbell rings.
It's Sam, a new neighbour of that flat's absentee occupant, Joanna. Sam is kind, handsome, sympathetic. . . and an investment consultant. So when he mistakes the dispirited Rosie for Joanna and offers to pop back later to cheer her up by cooking dinner for them both, singleton Rosie can't help thinking her luck's about to change - over a plate of gnocchi with Sam.
But dinner doesn't quite go to plan. What with the strange phone calls, Sam leaving abruptly, the pair of heavies turning up at the door, the discovery that the flat's bugged and the whole drug smuggling thing. Soon, Rosie realises there's an awful lot she doesn't know about the woman she's impersonating. And that no one is quite who they seem. And that she just might be in an awful lot of danger.
With echoes of Hitchcock's North By Northwest, FlatSpin is a hilarious, high-energy story of mistaken identity, magic and misdirection, featuring twist after twist, after twist.
If you enjoyed last year's Improbable Fiction, you won't want to miss this.
