Residents at a landmark London housing development are enjoying the benefits of an efficient and effective district heating system after a close collaboration between Heat Interface Unit (HIU) provider Altecnic and contractors working on the project.

Part of the wider regeneration of Stockwell Park, the £28 million Wayland House development has helped to transform an important London neighbourhood whilst providing around 160 homes for both sale and rental. The project included the demolition of a 15-storey 1960s tower block to make way for two mixed-tenure residential towers that make the most impressive views across the capital's skyline.

The new building, constructed by Wates Living Space, is arranged as two connecting blocks, one a 15-storey tower containing 84 affordable apartments, available for rent, the other a 20-storey tower containing 75 properties for private sale.

To ensure the development met and even exceeded current environmental legislation for new buildings, engineering contractor Promech installed an advanced district heating system utilising advanced electronic heat interface units (HIU) from Altecnic.

Throughout the design phase of the project and through to completion, Altecnic worked closely with the contractors, helping to select the correct pipework and valves and give advice on design and energy centre sizing. This close collaboration ensured a smooth installation process and maximum benefit for residents.

In one of two ground-floor plant rooms, a central energy centre is connected via a plate heat exchanger to the area's district heating system with a fully integrated control system.

Each apartment in the development is fitted with an AltecnicSATK 30103 HIU providing domestic hot water and heating for radiators in the rental units and underfloor heating in the sale apartments.

Terry Watley of Promech Services commented: "We found the Altecnic units very easy to install, and unlike others on the market it is compact and attractive to look at. We had great support from the Altecnic technical manager who helped us with the system design and was always on hand if other problems cropped up.

"For us one of the best features was the commissioning of the unit, again we had a site visit from Altecnic who talked us through the very simple procedures to commission the Altecnic. Since they were commissioned, the units have been working perfectly."

The units feature a host of innovative features, including fast acting electronic control valves, compensated heating temperatures, digital commissioning and class-leading pre-heat performance. The units have been designed from the ground up to maximise system delta T's ensuring highly efficient heat networks. Light and compact, they are also easy to install, set up and maintain. As a result, each apartment enjoys its own independent heating and ample hot water at all times whilst keeping costs and energy use to an absolute minimum.

Neil Parry, Altecnic National Specification Manager, added: "Energy efficiency was an important consideration in the design and construction of Wayland House, and our HIU products provide a class-leading solution that is easy to install and maintain whilst giving residents fully independent control of their hot water and heating."
