TREMCO Polyurethane System completes second deck refurb
for ABP

TREMCO's CP191, CP350 and CP951 products were used to
refurbish the 8,000m2 top deck of the "Empress" storage facility

Following the successful use of TREMCO's Polyurethane membrane on "Itchen" car storage facility in Southampton, port-operator Associated British Ports (ABP) has employed the same system on the refurbishment of the "Empress" facility. These facilities are essentially multi-storey car-parks used for temporary storage of prestige cars prior to loading them onto ships for export.

The roof decks of these facilities need to be fully weatherproof to prevent water leaking through to the lower levels with the risk of damaging the new vehicles during storage.

The waterproofing membranes are regularly inspected and generally replaced every 10 years. This work normally has to be completed over the summer period when the facilities are at their quietest.

Last summer, ABP employed specialist contractor, Cemplas Waterproofing and Concrete Repairs Ltd to replace the waterproofing system on the "Empress" facility.

The task is complicated by the design of the decks which employs pre-cast concrete planks on a steel frame. Normally such structures have a concrete slab cast on top with mesh reinforcement to distribute and absorb any movement in the plank joints.

Lacking this continuous surface slab, the joints between the concrete planks at the ABP storage facilities are simply grouted and the waterproofing membrane applied on top. The membrane therefore needs to be resilient and flexible to accommodate any movement.

TREMCO's CP191, CP350 and CP951 products were used to refurbish the 8,000m2 top deck of the "Empress" storage facility. Considerable care had to be taken to smooth out any high spots or irregularities that might lead to localised accelerated wear.

"We are currently completing the installation of the new membrane on the Orient extension where we are using TREMCO's products again", says ABP Engineering Manager, Gary Brown.
