Neil Davies | Come Rain or Shine
with ceramics by Chris Keenan and Matthew Chambers
16 July to 31 August
Breezy Day at Priest Cove | Oil on board | Neil Davies
From 16 July and throughout August, New Craftsman presents a summer-long exhibition by Penwith artist Neil Davies. This new collection of paintings, entitled Come Rain or Shine, responds to the benevolent and malevolent forces of the far west's uniquely powerful weather systems, and their effect on the ever changing beauty of the Cornish landscape. With broad strokes and a palette of deep colours, Davies paints the endless flux of Penwith's cliffs, hedgerows and heathland, following the seasons as wild flowers, gorse, heather and bracken come and go, as vegetation turns from lush green to rust and ochre and ocean colours change from pale silver to deep purple under ominous skies.
Accompanying this exhibition are the pure shapes and cool colours of works by celebrated British potter Chris Keenan, previously apprenticed to Edmund de Waal and now established as one of the UKs most highly respected ceramicist, with works held in collections at the V&A and Ashmolean Museums; and from 13th August onwards an inspiring collection of contemporary ceramics by Matthew Chambers, whose breathtakingly complex geometric constructions have made him one of Europe's most talked about artists.
This exhibition opens on 16 July and remains on show until 31 August.
