Kerry Harding and Marion Taylor | There and Back Again

28 May to 6 July

Road Trip 3, Marion Taylor, mixed media | Blue Hills II, Kerry Harding, oil on canvas

On show from the beginning of Whit Week and throughout June, Penwith Gallery's ‘There and Back Again' brings together the work of painters Kerry Harding and Marion Taylor in a show which considers both artists' journey from their early careers in abstraction, through to engagement with more representational work and on to a newly informed approach to painting.

A graduate of Ruskin School of Art Oxford, with a Masters in Fine Art Painting from Falmouth College of Arts, Krowji Studios resident Kerry Harding is one of Cornwall's leading painters and has exhibited in the UK, Australia, America and South Africa. This new collection of works responds to the textural and incidental detail of the Cornish landscape, demonstrating Harding's unique, occasionally surreal approach to image making and her ongoing exploration of process led, semi-figurative abstraction.

A graduate of Falmouth College of Arts and a resident of St Ives' Porthmeor Studios, Marion Taylor has long been established in the field of material led abstraction. Combining figurative references with highly expressive brush work, layers - both literal and perceptual - play a central role in her painting. This experimental new collection of work draws on the idea of journeys and is presented as an abstracted series of vivid, almost moving images.

‘There and Back Again' is on show from 28 May to 6 July at Penwith Gallery, Back Road West, St. Ives, TR26 1NL. Private view Friday 3 June 6.30-8.30pm.

Editors Notes

Penwith Gallery

Penwith Gallery is the home of the Penwith Society of Arts, founded in 1949 by a group of artists in St. Ives under the distinguished leadership of Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Bernard Leach. The building, once a pilchard-packing factory, was acquired by the society in 1960 and converted into a gallery, with artists' studios above.

In 1970 adjacent property became available and the artist members, assisted by Barbara Hepworth, sought funds to create the present group of galleries, studios and workshops. Today Penwith Galleries Ltd, a public charity, maintains these historically important buildings and presents a full programme of exhibitions by members and associates of the society, together with featured exhibitions by artists from Cornwall and elsewhere.
