TREMCO checks in at major airport terminal
TREMCO's products have been used in Arrivals at a UK airport
TREMCO's CS175 Epoxy Primer and SX100 Fibre-Reinforced Smoothing Compound have helped contractors complete the re-flooring of the arrivals and departures halls of the largest airport in the North West of England.
Specialist contractor, Axiom Group, secured the contract with the leading airport operator to remove the existing carpet and replace it with new rubber tiles, all while the airport terminal remained in use.
"We had to organise the work so that passengers and staff could continue to use the facilities while we were replacing the floor," explains Paul Beddard, Axiom's North West Regional Manager.
"The contract required replacement of the flooring in the departures hall, corridors and walkways and the same in arrivals," says Paul. "The total surface area involved was around 7,500m2," he adds.
After lifting the old carpet, Axiom had to clean the substrate of adhesive residues before priming the surface with CS175 Epoxy Primer.
CS175 is a two-part water-based epoxy primer which provides a breathable sealer for new and existing cementitious screeds, concrete and brickwork. A low-viscosity product which offers excellent coverage, CS175 also helps consolidate weak surfaces.
With the floor primed with CS175, Axiom then applied a 5-6mm thick layer of SX100 Fibre-Reinforced Smoothing Compound.
This is a self-levelling fibre-reinforced compound designed specifically for application to existing floors prior to the installation of new floor coverings - in this case a flexible rubber-based tile system.
"SX100 was the ideal product on this job because it imposes very little ‘pull' on the existing floor," says Paul. "Other products can set up stresses in the floor structure as they cure which in time leads to failure of the floor. This product has enough flexibility to prevent this happening," he adds.
"Axiom is a regular user of TREMCO's flooring products," comments Paul. "The products are well-spec'd and produce an excellent result. We also find that TREMCO's technical back-up is very good," he says.
The rapid curing times of the TREMCO products proved a significant benefit on this job, where disruption to day-to-day airport activities had to be kept to a minimum.
"Most of the time we had to separate off one part of the floor while passengers and staff used the remaining floor space, so we were working side-by-side with them," says Paul. Despite this, there were no mishaps or major disruptions to airport activities.
The successful completion of this project follows hard on the heels of a previous job for the same client which involved roughly 1,200m2of floor at another terminal at the same airport.
