Labcell's latest M400MR engine blow-by meter is compact, accurate and reliable, and is suitable for use with both diesel and spark-ignition (gasoline) engines. Supplied with an analogue output as standard, the M400MR is offered with the option of a CAN interface for simpler connection to data acquisition systems. Applications for the blow-by meter include engine testing, lubricant testing and fleet maintenance, both in engine dynamometer cells and for in-vehicle testing. Given the wide operating range, the M400MR engine blow-by meter is so versatile that one instrument can be used for virtually any blow-by measurement application.

Blow-by is quantified as either the flow rate at a given engine load or speed, or the time taken for a given volume of gas to flow over a given engine cycle. The M400MR meter can be used for either type of measurement, as the built-in signal conditioning operates in both flowmeter and totaliser modes. Using a solid-state sensor for flow measurement, the M400MR has a fast response, perfect zero stability, and is insensitive to temperature, pressure and velocity. Furthermore, there are no moving parts, so the meter is robust, reliable and virtually maintenance-free.

Users can select from three flow ranges by means of bypass ports: 4-150 LPM, 11-300 LPM and 15-400 LPM. The maximum total flow that can be recorded is 1000 litres. Accuracy is +/-1 per cent of reading and repeatability is +/-0.5 per cent of reading.

The versatile M400MR comes with an integral oil separator and damping tank, offers very low flow restriction, and is suitable for use with both spark-ignition and diesel engines. Connection to the engine valve cover is made via a 20 mm (0.75 inch) hose, so installation of the compact, lightweight meter is easy. Integral ports are provided for temperature and pressure probes.

As well as the programmable 0-5V linearised output and optional CAN interface, the M400MR has an LED display for indicating the operating mode and flow in a choice of engineering units (LPM, CFM, litres and cubic feet).
