About the book
Choosing Childcareis a comprehensive and user-friendly handbook written for parents who are considering their childcare options. Childcare expert and working mum Elyssa Campbell-Barr guides parents through the process of finding the right childcare provider for their family. As well as looking at the pros and cons of each type of care, she gives ideas of questions to ask and things to look out for when meeting prospective childcarers. There's practical advice on crucial issues such as paying for childcare, finding provision for children with additional needs, and building a good relationship with your childcarer, plus top tips on your rights as a working parent and juggling work and family life. Throughout, working and studying parents share their real-life experiences of, and advice on, choosing and using childcare. And every section includes links to details of specialist organisations and publications that provide further useful information, either UK-wide or (where regulations and requirements differ) in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.Choosing Childcareis attractively designed and illustrated with photographs, and boxed-out highlights, making it inviting to read and easy to search through. Foreword excerpt by Dr Penelope Leach
"Childcare is an emotionally loaded and uncomfortably complicated topic for almost every parent, so the straightforward simplicity of this book is doubly welcome.
Choosing Childcaretells you what kinds of childcare there are, how they compare with each other, how you might find them and what they might cost. Changing the way a child is cared for is never easy, andChoosing Childcaredoes not pretend that it is - or should be. But the book conveys a reassuring certainty that whatever hours or different types of childcare you plan on using, even a really clingy baby who has been used to having a parent home all the time through a year's leave will eventually take sympathetic daycare in his stride if you give him enough time to adapt."
