John Lewis ad inspires sweet act of kindness for Dundee Care
Homes
This year’s John Lewis advert has captured the hearts of
many people across this country this Christmas, but none more so than Rebecca
Mitchell from Dundee. Inspired by the advertising campaign’s powerful message
about how lonely the festive season can be, especially for the elderly, Rebecca
decided to do something special and extra sweet for elderly members of the
community.
Rather than fundraise for an age related charity, Rebecca
has choc-raised, by asking people to donate boxes of chocolates and from what
started as a small idea has grown sugary arms and legs as she now has 150 boxes
and enough to gift a box to every resident in all three of Balhousie Care
Groups’s Dundee Care Homes.
Rebecca, who runs Turtle Tots swimming classes for babies
and toddlers in Dundee, will now be visiting each of the Balhousie Care Homes
including Moyness, St Ronans and Clement Park Care Home to deliver the sweet
gifts.
With many boxes of chocolates to deliver, Rebecca has been
amazed at how much her idea has captured people’s imagination. Rebecca said:
“I came with the idea after my husband and I watched the
John Lewis advert and it really struck a chord with us. I have a gran in
sheltered housing and I often see people who are alone a lot of the time, like
the Man on the Moon in the advert. I really wanted to do something a bit
different and thought chocolates were something everyone could enjoy and where
better to give the gifts than in some of the local Balhousie Care Homes.
Rebecca continued:
“When I started the campaign, I thought I’d be lucky to
collect 20 boxes – never did I think we’d reach 150! I’ve had mums from Turtle
Tots, family and friends donating boxes. Also, other Turtle Tot licensees are
doing the same in other parts of the UK which is great.”
Margaret Stephen, Home Manager at Clement Park Care Home,
added:
“Rebecca’s mission to do something worthwhile for the
elderly in her local community has definitely been a success. The residents at
all of Balhousie Care Group’s care homes will be delighted with extra special
sweet treats over the festive period. Thank you, Rebecca!”
