One of radio's most famous names has not only designed but also made her own wedding rings for her forthcoming nuptials.

Multi-award winning broadcaster Fi Glover and fiancé Rick Jones turned their dream creations into reality at a special class being run at theLondon Jewellery Workshopby highly regarded jewellery designerNina Gilbey.

Fi says that she and Rick were preparing to have their rings designed by a firm in Hatton Garden when Nina mentioned she ran special workshops for couples to take over a workshop and make their own wedding rings.

Fi explains: "I can't say that designing and then making the weddings rings for my marriage had crossed my mind until Nina told me about the workshops she runs - and then it was a great idea!

"But it is a lovely thing to do with your partner and a really special feeling to wear a ring that you have made yourself on what is a special day in your life."

She added: "I have never made jewellery before but Rick and I are creative - we both love cooking and I do quite a lot of sewing and even though we work in very different kinds of jobs neither of us uses our hands enough, so it was a complete joy to sit down and concentrate on making something. The class made us realise that we'd like to do more of it."

The rings are a stylish and simple gold band design and the wedding ring making classes are run regularly at the Shoreditch-based London Jewellery Workshop. Attendees are presented with champagne and Nina shares her skills and specialist knowledge to help make the special commemorative rings.

Nina says: "Fi and Rick were a joy to work with and they enjoyed it too since this is such a memorable day for the couple to make their rings which are then so much more meaningful.

"It's a fantastic experience and it's just myself and the couple in the workshop. The couples who do this usually send in wonderful wedding photos showing their rings and every one looks superb and they all have special meaning."

Fi says that the wedding ring making class was a touching experience for her and Rick.

She added: "We thought the whole thing was absolutely fantastic especially because it was much harder work than we thought and we couldn't recommend it highly enough for others to do the same.

"Nina is a great teacher - she had just the right amount of intervention at key points but she left us alone enough so that we feel we did really make the rings ourselves.

"Rick and I loved just being able to do something together that didn't involve the kids, the house or work!

"Though having said that, designing and making our own wedding rings was much harder than I thought it was going to be - so respect to the whole jewellery profession!"
