June 2018

New board members for NMBS

NMBS made two new appointments to its management board at their AGM on the 6th June 2018.

Frank Howard and Glynis Catterson both become board members, bringing with them a wealth of experience that will contribute to the continued success of the UK's leading buying society for independent builders', plumbing and heating, timber, and hardware merchants.

Frank takes on the role having been involved in the merchanting sector for over 30 years. He established Frank Howard Tools & Fixings Ltd in 1988 before growing the business into the largest independent tool stockist in Essex.

Now operating from branches in Braintree and Chelmsford as well as a further branch in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, Frank Howard Tools & Fixings offers a comprehensive choice of tools and building materials to the trade, local authority and industrial markets as well as to the DIY enthusiast.

Speaking of his appointment, Frank said: "I'm genuinely excited about becoming a member of the NMBS management board and hope I can add value to what is already a very experienced and accomplished team. I'm looking forward to getting to grips with the role and to using my skills and passion to benefit the wider independent merchanting sector."

Glynis meanwhile is a director at S&A Merchants. This independent supplier of building materials and supplies operates from two branches in County Durham - one in Barnard Castle and a second in Crook.

Prior to moving into the merchanting sector in 2001, Glynis was a qualified accountant working in the manufacturing and the chemical industry.

She has also served on the NBG executive board for the last five years, where she is currently responsible for finance and for supporting the development of new IT systems.

Glynis said of her new position: "I am honoured and excited to be accepted onto the NMBS management board. Coming from a small merchant myself, I hope to act as a strong voice for other small merchants whilst helping to ensure NMBS continues to evolve and to add value to its members."

Frank and Glynis join an existing NMBS management board that already comprises:

Non-executive Chair
Jeremy Miller

Chris Hayward (NMBS)
Julie Langford (NMBS)
Andy Hextall (NMBS)

Board Members
Chris Bence (George Bence & Sons Ltd)
Peter Buttle (Buttle Plc)
Mark Davies (LBS Builders Merchants Ltd)

Chris Hayward, managing director at NMBS, adds: "On behalf of the existing board, NMBS and all its merchant members, I would like to welcome Frank and Glynis to their new positions.

"Their appointment further strengthens a hardworking and dedicated team who ensure NMBS is a buying society for independent merchants, governed and directed by independent merchants.

"I'm sure their knowledge, first-hand experience and new ideas will make an invaluable and important contribution."

Notes to editors:

  • NMBS (National Merchant Buying Society) is the UK's largest buying group for independent builder's, plumbing and heating, timber and hardware merchants.
  • Since its formation over 50 years ago in 1963, NMBS has continued to grow and evolve. Today it represents more 1000 merchant members and enjoys collective buying power in excess of £1.7BN. It uses this buying power to negotiate favourable prices and terms for members from over 600 brand leading, building industry suppliers.
  • Collectively, NMBS members operate more than 3000 branches nationwide and achieve annual sales of £7BN. This equates to approximately 40% of the value of the entire merchanting sector.
  • Further value-adding services offered by NMBS include credit insurance, marketing support and access to a dedicated and secure portal known as the ‘Report Centre'. This enables members and suppliers to deal with many day-to-day transactional requirements online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • NMBS also stages regular networking, knowledge sharing and trading events that bring together both its members and suppliers. These events include the NMBS Golf Day, the NMBS Gala Dinner, the NMBS Dinner Dance, the NMBS All-Industry Conference and the NMBS Exhibition.
  • As part of its commitment to ‘Strengthening Independents', NMBS not only delivers services and events to enhance the profitability and success of its members but also acts as a voice and as a champion for the independent merchanting sector.
