VIPole's encrypted collaboration app goes open source

19th April 2016

Encrypted communications pioneer, VIPole, has announced that it will be making a key component of its encrypted messaging and collaboration software open source. The move will allow IT security experts to independently evaluate the software for its encryption effectiveness and vulnerability to attack.

The move to open source is extremely significant for IT professionals looking to build secure, private communications networks. As well as a personal instant messaging app, VIPole produces a server edition that allows organisations to create their own secure messaging and collaboration eco-systems, independent of third-party cloud services. Open source software (OSS) will enable engineers to create their own client applications for VIPole’s strongly encrypted collaboration system and verify that  VIPole’s proprietary encryption techniques perform as specified.

Christopher Miller, head of development at VIPole commented, “It may seem strange that opening up your code to scrutiny in this way can actually make it more secure, but that’s exactly what we aim to achieve. With many independent developers looking at the code, vulnerabilities are more easily spotted and patched, ultimately improving the system for all users.”

The VIPole platform offers complete end-to-end encryption, not just of instant messages, group chats and voice calls, but also video calls and conferencing - the only messaging platform to do so. Encryption also extends to file sharing, and a comprehensive suite of collaboration tools such as a task manager and calendar application. All data is AES-256 and RSA 3072 encrypted to ensure that it is accessible only to the user and intended recipients.

VIPole was the first firm to offer a fully end-to-end encrypted messenger capable of carrying voice and video content, and remains the only one capable of supporting audio and video conferencing. As well as personal messaging and data protection on desktop and mobile devices, VIPole’s professional applications include legal and financial firms, commercial enterprises, medical and telecare.

Notes for editors

VIPole is an international company, with its headquarters in the UK, offering state-of-the-art, high-level encryption solutions for enterprises dealing with commercially or personally sensitive information, and individuals wishing to protect themselves from hackers, identity thieves and malware. A key feature of the system is the unique software design that ensures user data remains encrypted at every stage. Even if hackers or unauthorised personnel gain access to the device or server, user data is impossible to decrypt.

Launched in 2013, VIPole Secure Messenger now provides encrypted file storage, secure video and audio communications, group chats and collaboration tools to over 500,000 users worldwide, all of whom are protected by the highest level AES-256 and RSA-3072 encryption. VIPole offers a robust solution for financial institutions, medical practices, educational establishments and government offices handling sensitive personal data. VIPole is available as a cloud service, or an on-premise solution. VIPole also offers both free and paid versions of its products for personal use on PC, Mac OS X, Linux, Android and iOS.
