Pickering farm shop shortlisted in national farm retailer awards

The team at a North Yorkshire farm shop and café are celebrating after reaching the final in three categories of a competition to find the UK's best farm retailers.

Pickering's Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café has been shortlisted in the Small Farm Shop of the Year, theFarm Café/Restaurant of the Year and the Farm Shop Butchery of the Year Awards in the annual Farm Retail Association (FRA) awards.

Cedarbarn co-founder, Karl Avison said: "We have been farming in the Pickering area for four generations and are passionate about rearing, growing, retailing and serving fresh, seasonal and local produce, so we're delighted to represent North Yorkshire in these national awards.

"It's a credit to our team of 50 that all three areas of the business: farm shop, butchery and café are in a final with some of the best farm retailing businesses in the UK."

The farm shop faces competition from Bells Farm Shop in Worcestershire and Alder Carr Farm Shop in Shropshire. The butchers are up against Welbeck Farm Shop in Nottinghamshire and Millets Farm Shop in Oxfordshire and the café will meet Millets Restaurants and Runcton Farm Café in their final.

The awards, sponsored by specialist retailer COOK, will take place on Tuesday 5thMarch at Holiday Inn Peterborough West as part of the FRA's annual Stronger Together event, 2024.

Chair of the Farm Retail Association, Emma Mosey said: "Farm shops and farmers markets continue to be the nation's retail beacons for sourcing fresh and nutritious produce with low food miles, from passionate and knowledgeable often family-run, independent businesses.

"It is right that we celebrate the crucial role that these invaluable food and drink retailers play at the heart of the communities they serve. Running throughout our finalists are inspiring stories of innovation, consistent quality produce and customer service excellence: terrific achievements and qualities that have been demonstrated during a challenging period for retailers amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis."

Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café began as a small PYO strawberries operation from acaravan 27 years ago andnow is a thriving farm shop and café that sources a large percentage of its produce from its own farm and a neighbouring farm supplemented with local suppliers.
