Obsidian Interiors have reached the finals of the prestigious Quooker Designerati Awards 2023. The awards recognise and celebrate the work of the best interior designers in the United Kingdom.

The company, based in Cheltenham, has been placed in three categoriesBathroom Design of the year over £15k’, ‘Bathroom Design of the year under £15k’ and ‘Super Lux Design – Bathroom’ for their designs in three Cheltenham homes.

Lead designer and showroom manager Alison Evans who has also recently launched the businesses new retail arm ‘Obsidian Home’, is hoping her entry for the ‘Bathroom Design of the Year over £15k’ will catch the judge’s eye.

Alison said: “My client had fallen in love with an Italian hotel suite and asked me to recreate it in his five-bed semi-detached period property in Cheltenham.  To achieve the full drama and opulence he was looking for we knocked two rooms into one and gave him double basins, a large walk-in shower, a separate bath, dark woods, smoked glass, black elements and splash of gold. With a clever use of stud walls, creative lighting, wallpaper, and focal mirrors, we created this luxurious main bathroom with the touch of glamour he requested.”

Lynsey Rowe, an interior designer at the Fairview Road company has reached the finals in two categories, ‘Bathroom Design of the Year under £15k’ and ‘Super Lux Design – Bathroom’.

For the ‘Bathroom Design of the Year under £15k’ entry Lynsey had been commissioned to design an ensuite bathroom opening directly into the existing master bedroom of a Cheltenham home but being a listed building, there were many building restrictions she had to overcome. Lynsey maintained symmetry in the room with a centrally positioned freestanding marble basin and a wall to ceiling mirror. She also created a ‘step out’ into the bedroom to increase the width of the room and added a false ceiling for seclusion. Along with bespoke joinery, Lynsey installed 2.5m high oversized doors with glass openings integrated into the panelling that could be folded back to reveal the entire bathroom into the bedroom and created a beautiful statement bathroom.

Lynsey’s second entry, in ‘Super Lux Design – Bathroom’ was in another Grade II listed Georgian property, also in Cheltenham, which was being turned back from offices into a family home.

Lynsey said: “It was such a pleasure returning this wonderful room back from offices to a bathroom again. Originally, my clients wanted the shower, basin, WC and vanity placed against the outer walls, but I persuaded them to allow me to insert a partition wall to divide the space. Thankfully they embraced the concept and loved the end result. I was thinking about privacy and symmetry in the room, and it worked really well. Whilst we had to keep many of the original features because of its listed status, we also introduced some period touches in keeping with the rest of the room such as ‘his and hers’ radiators, an upholstered bench with chandelier above and panelling on the walls.”

Commenting on reaching the finals Alison Evans said: “We are overwhelmed to be in the finals of the Designerati Awards again this year, with three fantastic projects that our teams have worked really hard on. We are lucky to work with some great clients here in Cheltenham on their period homes which always throw up design challenges but eventually give us show-stopping results.”

She continued: “It’s been a very busy time for us recently, choosing the new layouts we’ll be having in our showroom from early next year. Whilst we can’t wait to reveal the new look, we’re also delighted to be offering all the existing layouts at incredible sale prices for anyone who would like a designer kitchen or bathroom at a hugely reduced price.”

The winners of the awards will be revealed at a glittering ceremony in London on 22nd Nov 20231 at Wembley Stadium.
