Bright Instruments will exhibit its new OTF5500 Touch Screen for the first time in public next week at the IBMS Congress (28-30 Sept 2015, Stand 800) in Birmingham UK. This is a significant update to the existing OTF 5000.

Mark Fenn, Managing Director at Bright Instruments says, "Based on the long-established and reliable OTF5000 cryostat, the new OTF5500 brings the extensive range of Bright cryostats completely up to date. New styling coupled with improved user ergonomics, the latest blade systems in the ever-reliable and powerful 5040 microtome, a huge choice of options plus money-saving package deals make these cryostats absolutely unique."

The main features and benefits of the new machine are as follows:

  • New design for OTF top with more storage space on flat top.

  • Microtome moved 44mm to the right to increase the internal work space.

  • Optional larger quick freeze block.

  • Bar code reader for specimen management.

  • Capability to interface to the LIS.

However, perhaps the most impressive new feature is the touch screen itself:

  • Temperature set point and thickness of section can be changed quickly and easily with one simple step

  • The settings on the touch screen can be restricted so changes to settings can only be made by authorised users

  • The OTF5500 has the ability to have a bar code reader for traceability of samples as well as traceability of the operator who prepared the samples

  • Connectivity to the lab information system which helps reduce transcription errors
