In 2014 the Leach Pottery, St Ives and Cornish clothing company Seasalt announced the launch of the Seasalt Bursary. Following on from the success of last year’s recruitment campaign, the Leach Pottery and Seasalt are now offering another individual the enviable opportunity to train and study at the famous St. Ives studio as part of the Seasalt Bursary.

Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the Leach Pottery promotes the work and life of Bernard Leach, and works to further the development of studio pottery and encourage young talent through its studio and education programme. Seasalt, a family run company with long standing links to the creative community in St Ives, are delighted to continue backing this innovative scheme.

In 2014, following a search that saw applications from as far afield as Spain and the USA, the Leach Pottery appointed their first Seasalt apprentice Callum Trudgeon.

Callum said, “I always wanted to be a ‘maker’. Opportunities to work at a pottery with this kind of history and reputation are hard to come by. I was thrilled to be selected, it’s a special place and I feel very lucky.”

Julia Twomlow, Leach Pottery Director, said, We’ve had a fabulous year with Callum – he has been a great addition to the team and we very much look forward to working with Seasalt again to find our next apprentice. This is a great opportunity for someone to start out on a new career path doing something really creative but also practical and rewarding.

Seasalt Joint Managing Director Neil Chadwick, said, “We’ve always loved and been inspired by St Ives and its artistic heritage. We’ve been involved with the Leach to some degree for many years and we’re looking forward to welcoming the next Seasalt apprentice.”

Applications for the scheme are now invited. No previous ceramics experience is necessary, but the Leach Pottery is looking for someone with enthusiasm and natural creative flair who is available for an initial 12 months. Preference will be given to applicants from within the county of Cornwall.  For the right candidate, it is hoped that the one year apprenticeship could lead to a permanent position at the Leach Pottery.

The Seasalt Bursary is providing funding towards the establishment of this position on an annual basis. For more information and to apply for the Seasalt Bursary please visit the Leach Pottery website: www.leachpottery.com/opportunities/
