The Pendle Pig, a hog roast company in Lancashire, has commented on a study showing British consumers are concerned with imported meat

The number of Britons who’re wary of foods brought into the UK from abroad has increased significantly over the court of the last 24 months, a study by the Food Standards Agency has found.

The Food and You survey revealed that 66 percent of British consumers have reservations when it comes to imported meat, with 65 percent concerned by food. Comparatively, it was shown that 42 percent had the same concerns over British produce while only 38 percent expressed concern for meat produced in the UK.

Created to gauge people’s perception of the risk of food poisoning as well as their outlook on production and food safety, the survey correlates with previous research which had also shown that Britons prefer food, meats in particular, to be produced inside of the UK by local farmers.

However, there was a notable increase in concern in this year’s survey relative to the previous two, which were carried out in 2010 and 2012 respectively. FSA food hygiene rating recognition was also up from 55 percent to 76 percent.

In all, 3,453 adults were interviewed, providing valuable insight on attitudes towards food.

The Pendle Pig is a hog roast catering company in Lancashire. Frequently commenting on news and research relating to the catering and food sector, they say that the Food and You survey confirms a trend towards more local, naturally reared meat.

A spokesman for the company said: “This research confirms our own suspicions and experiences, that being that there is an increasing trend towards British food, especially when it comes to meat.

“You only have to look at the huge rise in the number of people booking hog roast catering for their event in the last decade or so, but particularly in the last few years, to see that there is currently a huge appetite for produce that’s been reared by local, independent farms.”

They also say that consumers don’t just prioritise British meat but also produce that has been reared locally and in an ethical manner.

“It’s not just about British meat vs non-British meat. The type of farm a pig is raised on and where that farm is also matters. If you live in Lancashire, for example, you’re going to want a pig that’s been reared on an organic farm by an independent family farmer. And we give our customers exactly that when we cater at their event!”
