Lord Wandsworth College celebrates 10% increase in pupils achieving A* or A grades at A Level

The 6th Form pupils of Lord Wandsworth College have received excellent A Level results today and recorded a 10% increase in the number of pupils achieving either A* or A grades, significantly bucking the national trend. For the vast majority their places at many of the country’s most prestigious universities are secure. The percentage achieving A* to C grades was up from 86% last year to 90% this year.

The Art department is one of the College’s most consistent performers and has a reputation as one of the finest in the country. 80% of Art A level candidates achieved either an A* or A grade this year. The Maths department continued its outstanding success too, with more than 67% of candidates achieving A* or A grades for Maths and 86% of the pupils for Further Maths. The Science departments were particularly strong this year: 64% of Chemistry candidates achieved A* or A.

This year’s top achieving candidates included Luke Cackett (A*A*A) and Anthony Zhang (A*A*A*) who both go up to Oxford in October, and local Long Sutton girl Lizzy Heywood (A*A*A*A*) who will join her older brother Robbie there at Worcester College. But these were only three of the many candidates who achieved at least 3 A grades.

Along with celebrating the achievements of some very distinguished academics we have celebrated some great performances by pupils with more modest targets.  The College judges its performance on what is called “value added”, in other words how the candidates do relative to their academic abilities. Some of the warmest praise and congratulation were received this morning by pupils who beat their expectations by as much as 3 grades.

Headmaster Fergus Livingstone is very pleased with the results. “The College is going from strength to strength” he said, “with improving A level grades forming only a part of an ambitious development plan. It is a very exciting period in the College’s history and we are enjoying the momentum we have generated. Our most important priority is the development of our pupils’ characters, and it is interesting to see how positively this influences their success in examinations amongst other things. The College looks forward to the new academic year with the largest number of pupils in its history, a new uniform, a revised timetable and fresh approach to intellectually enriching activity on Saturday mornings. This year’s Upper 6th form have been fantastic, and I am delighted that they have done so very well in their exams. The staff here, and no doubt their parents, are rightly proud of them.”
