On show at Tremenheere Gallery this May, Newlyn Society of Artists presents ‘Drawing Explored', an exhibition of new works which demonstrate the wide range of approaches to drawing that NSA artists employ.

This specially curated collection of preparatory sketches, observational drawings, and works on paper in pencil, pen, charcoal and paint are accompanied by large scale works, sculpture, video and conceptual ideas in a range of media, alongside a documentary film in which the artists discuss their own approach to drawing.

‘An expanded definition of drawing is the fundamental ambition of this show. Drawing is now such a wide-ranging practice we thought it would be interesting, revealing and exciting to see how our artists engage with it' says NSA member Peter Webster.

Works on show in the ground floor exhibition space will be made up of selected works by NSA artists, while the upstairs space will showcase an extended collection by NSA members Michelle Ohlson and Jack Davis. Reflecting the current, international resurgence of interest in drawing, this must-see exhibition gives a fascinating insight into advances in drawing practice within the context of 21st century art.

Editors Notes

Newlyn Society of Artists

Established in the late 19th century by an influential group of Landscape and Social Realist painters, the NSA exists today as a group of around 85 contemporary artists working within, or in relation to, West Cornwall, across a range of disciplines from painting and sculpture to performance and the moving image. The NSA is run by an annually elected committee and continues to seek new opportunities and welcome new membership applications. In 2017, the NSA began an exciting new partnership with Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, whose new, contemporary gallery space is now their new home, and the venue for twice yearly NSA exhibitions.
