The St Ives School of Painting opened in 1938 and is associated with Cornwall's most distinguished artists, including Peter Lanyon, Sir Terry Frost and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, all of whom attended its classes during their early careers. Today it remains one of the UKs most respected schools of art, thanks to its prestigious history, diverse range of courses, and unrivalled location on Porthmeor Beach.

This April, the School marks its 80th year, and celebrations begin with consecutive exhibitions at St Ives' Penwith Gallery, firstly by students of the school, and then by its professional artist tutors. As the first in a series of anniversary events, these two shows demonstrate the unique influence of location, and of people past and present, that have come together over the last 80 years in the school's historic studio space.

The first of these, on show from 9th to 16th March, is a mixed show of work by students of the School's one-year Porthmeor Programme, which offers semi-professional artists of all ages the chance to study with some of Cornwall's leading professional artists. The second exhibition, from 23rd March to 6th April, showcases the talent of the School's highly regarded artist tutors, and includes work by Alice Mumford, Clare Wardman, Gary Long, Kerry Harding, Amy Albright, Ashley Hold, Emma McClure, Iain Robertson, Marion Taylor, Liz Hough, Greg Humphries,Ilker Cinarel, Liz Luckwell and others. This exhibition opens with a special one-man performance by artist and tutor Ilker Cinarel, and over the duration of the show a series of scheduled events includes live painting demonstrations by Alice Mumford, Gary Long and others, and talks by Liz Luckwell, Marion Taylor, Liz Hough and Hilary Jean Gibson. Editors Notes

St Ives School of Painting

Situated on St Ives' spectacular Porthmeor Beach, the Grade II listed Porthmeor Studios building has been an inspiring workspace for artists for over a century. Today, the St Ives School of Painting operates out of two of the building's studios. The remaining studios are rented out to local and national artists while the Tate Gallery has historically run a residency programme in Studio 5. Meanwhile, twelve boats continue to work out of the fishermen's cellars beneath the studios.

From the late 19thcentury onwards, Porthmeor Studios became an inspiring workplace and exhibition space for internationally acclaimed artists, including some of the big names of 20th Century British painting, such as Julius Olsson, Ben Nicholson, Francis Bacon, Patrick Heron and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Today their paint marks still decorate the studio walls where important pieces of work were created. The St Ives School of Painting has been running art classes in Porthmeor Studios since 1938. In 2000 it became a registered charity.Class sizes are limited and tutors are all practising artists with many years teaching experience. The school provides quality tuition across a variety of artistic disciplines, suitable for all levels from complete beginners to those with more experience.

In 2010, The Borlase Smart John Wells Trust headed a £4 million renovation, supported with public funding by Arts Council England, to renovate and refurbish the building. Overseen by award-winning architects Long & Kentish, the sensitive renovations of the Grade II listed building have ensured that the features of its important heritage are not lost, while providing a facelift which enables the unique complex to move into the future as a successful and functioning workplace for both the artists and the fishermen.
