Gowercroft project is shortlisted for the 2017 Stirling Prize

6a architect's innovative Photography Studio for Juergen Teller, for which Gowercroft Joinery provided bespoke windows and doors, has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize, which recognises the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.

The building's nomination comes after winning this year's RIBA National Award, the RIBA London Awardand London's Building of the Year.

Formerly the site of a two-storey 1950s light-industrial unit, which had fallen into disrepair, this inspirational projectcomprises a series of three individual buildings and gardens, which span a long narrow 60-metre plot on the edge of Ladbroke Grove in West London.

Serving as a new studio, office and archive for the celebrated fashion and fine art photographer, the complex includes a top lit studio space, a kitchen, library and ensemble of ancillary rooms including a yoga studio and sauna.

Designed by 6a architects, the brief was to create a "light-filled, flexible, informal and welcoming set of spaces, which would have a natural flow and sociability".

Gowercroft Joinery was appointed to provide bespoke windows and doors solutions, which would meet the stringent insulation requirements and also offer a high quality finish, colour and detailing that would blend with the minimalist concretedesign.

Individual designs were developed for 45 separate glazed units, including sets of internal doors and casement windows of various sizes through to large lift and slide doors, French doors and expansive multi-storey glazed internal screens that line the stairwells.

Made from Accoya wood and high specification triple glazing, the windows and doors delivered excellent thermal performance, security and most importantly the specific light hues required for photography, whilst their sheer semi-transparent grey external and white internal finish mirrored the subtle tones of the building fabric.

An open and sociable flow between all the spaces, internal or external was important. Gowercroft's craftsmanship, rigour and flexibility was instrumental in achieving this vision and their commitment to the delivery of the project was exceptional' said Tom Emerson, Director of 6a architects.
