200-plus calls to Council about storm damage

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: "The Council has received more than 200 calls on Storm Aileen which caused damage across the city last night blowing over trees and branches.

"Wind speeds of 48mph were measured at 2am during the storm's peak and there have been reports of damage to property and vehicles.

"Three teams from our Parks department responded to the call out working tirelessly through the night .They are being debriefed and stood down and a second team of specially-trained chainsaw operators are now being sent out to clear the remaining issues.

"No major roads have been blocked and we are currently assessing the impact it may have had on our parks. The main roads into the city are open and our teams have now cleared some of the minor roads which were blocked by fallen trees overnight.

"A tree has fallen on the roof of council-owned flats in Brynfedw in Llanedeyrn. This was made safe last night but further work may be required. The Parks Department is in contact with Housing on the next steps that need to be taken and residents will be kept informed.

"During the night, the Emergency Management Duty officer co-ordinated information and the Media and Communications team tweeted the public with road closures.

"Our Media and Communications team will continue to update the public on our social media channels during the day as more information becomes available.

"Reports coming in from residents are being passed on to our parks teams. Works removing obstructions will be carried out on a priority basis and matters are being dealt with through our established plans."
