The Sound Doctor tackles obesity with ‘The Cooking Song’

The Cooking Song is the latest animated film from The Sound Doctor - the brainchild and passion of former BBC producers and presenters, Dominic Arkwright and Rosie Runciman.

In the battle against obesity, The Cooking Song offers a different way for health educators to engage with people.

The film itself encourages individuals to downsize portion sizes, reduce salt intake, lessen the use of fats and to keep active.

Rosie Runciman, co-founder of The Sound Doctor, said “There are hundreds of health messages about exercise and diet. Most are boring and prescriptive. By adding style, humour and a catchy tune to the message, we believe that it will resonate with people and stay top of mind when cooking in the kitchen”

Like all of The Sound Doctor productions, the film presents information in an accessible way, helping people understand their own health conditions and health risks better, manage them more successfully, and improve their quality of life as a result.

It is widely recognised that obesity has become endemic in Britain. Lack of exercise and eating too much has turned us into one of the fattest nations in the world. The most recent NHS review into obesity in England reports that 68% of men and 58% of women are obese[1].

Rosie continues, “We all know that eating less and doing more is the key to combating obesity, and that this is a lifestyle choice which many people find difficult to make. Fun and quirky messages like The Cooking Song can help people introduce little changes into their eating habits - ‘something everyone can do’ - which will lead to big differences in their longer-term health outcomes.”

Everyone knows that diet and exercise are key to a healthier and happier lifestyle. However, the study also reveals that 26% of adults in England do less than 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise a week, classing them as 'inactive'. People still find it difficult to change their eating habits. This is largely because we are living in what the health authorities call an obesogenic environment[2], where less than healthy eating choices are the norm. This encourages excessive weight gain and obesity.

The Cooking Song is the latest addition to The Sound Doctor’s extensive library of films that give practical and accessible help and advice to the public on a wide range of health issues. This so far includes around 300 films covering six conditions, and is constantly growing.

The Sound Doctor is the UK’s leading provider of film and audio content about health conditions. Created for patients, and used by a number of CCGs and Hospital  Trusts around the country, its content is unmatched in quality, range and production values.
