Highest footfall ever recorded in Cardiff on June 3rd

The UEFA Champions League Final attracted the highest ever number of people into Cardiff city centre - smashing the previous record by almost 44,000 people.

A total of 314,264 people came into the city to soak up the fantastic atmosphere of the men's UEFA Champions League Final on Saturday, June 3rd.

The previous record - 270,421 - was set on Saturday, March 17, 2012, when Wales secured a third Six Nations Grand Slam in eight years by beating France 16-9 in the then Millennium Stadium.

But even more people streamed into the city centre on June 3, when Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-1 to lift the coveted UEFA Champions League Trophy at the National Stadium of Wales (the name of the Principality Stadium for the event).

Monitoring of city centre footfall began in 1999 when the first camera was installed on the front of Boots in Queen Street. Full monitoring began in 2007.

The figures are digitally recorded with cameras across the city showing the footfall for specific streets in the city centre.

The busiest streets on June 3 were High Street, 74,328; Queen Street, 81,308; St Mary Street, 51,426; and The Hayes, 88,939.

Cllr Russell Goodway, Cabinet Member for Investment and Development, praised the authorities who worked so hard to put on this event and said: "Hosting an event of this scale shouldn't be underestimated and all of the authorities involved have done their city proud.

"Some believe this was just 90 minutes of football, but it was far more than that. The Council played a pivotal role in making this event a success and once again, the city has delivered."

He added: "I appreciate that there was some disruption due to the necessary security arrangements that had to be put in place, but with the very sad news that we have seen in both Manchester and London, I think the public realise security and keeping people safe is of paramount importance.

"The highest footfall ever recorded in Cardiff builds on Cardiff's brand, as a city which can deliver the biggest sporting events in the world, as well as so much more.

"This final was broadcasted to 200 countries across the globe and has, once again, firmly put the Welsh capital on the world stage.

"It is supporting authorities that work behind the scenes that make these events the success that they are. It was a 24/7 operation and all the hard work put in by all the agencies involved is often overlooked.

"This wasn't just a football match in the Principality Stadium, it was an opportunity to make our city shine to a global audience, to market ourselves as an up and coming city that has so much to offer and we did exactly that, and I am proud that we have delivered."
