Cardiff Council statement on today's story about the homeless

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "Street begging and homelessness is an issue which affects every city in the UK and we have been working hard with our partners to support these vulnerable people on a one to one basis through our outreach programme.

"We do not force rough sleepers off the streets and never have. At Cardiff Council we are committed to ending rough sleeping by finding people the accommodation their needs require. Our gateway scheme gives help and support to those that want it, by providing alternate accommodation, health requirements and support.

"Additional funding for accommodation has been made available with the Huggard Centre to accommodate those that want to use it throughout the Champions League weekend as we realised the event could draw more homeless people to the city. On average our staff help 12 rough sleepers a month into accommodation but it has to be realised that we can only help those that want to be helped.

"We work with The Huggard, Wallich, Salvation Army and other partners to help support rough sleepers to come off the street and we have 215 hostel spaces for single homeless people and an additional 45 emergency spaces operating year round."
