This June, Lemon Street Gallery presents Silent Frontier, an exhibition of work by contemporary landscape painter Gareth Edwards. A graduate of Goldsmiths College and member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, Edwards is a resident of St Ives' historic Porthmeor Studios and an elected RWA Academician.

Demonstrating the artists' typically powerful approach to process and the materiality of paint, this new collection of beautifully textured oil, ash and oxide paintings invites us to contemplate ideas of the human ‘journey'- our physical journey through time and space, and our psychological journey of existence - taking us through atmospheric landscapes and shifting emotional terrains in the company of our own, unique cargo of thoughts and memories. Literal and abstract references to wilderness landscapes, coniferous forests, ravines, tundra and the wide Atlantic Ocean act as metaphors for psychological spaces yet to be explored, and ideas of the theoretical human journey are accompanied by allusions to specific journeys, including, amongst others, Captain Oates' famous self-sacrifice in the frozen Arctic.

These typically large, and in some cases monumental artworks are contrasted by twelve small, sumptuous paintings entitled ‘British Sea Light', each executed in a short but incredibly intense moment of engagement with the open ocean. On show from 9 to the 30 June 2017, Silent Frontier demonstrates Edwards' ongoing commitment to the artistic interrogation of subjectivity and self, and the intensely personal approach to landscape painting that has made him one of the South West's most important artists.
