Luxury Dog Hut! Traditional shepherd huts inspire a new breed of
dog kennel
Milly the Welsh border collie is benefiting from her owners' love of their traditional shepherd hut, made by Blackdown Shepherd Huts in Somerset. Jennifer Dickens and John Gee bought their shepherd hut in 2015 and they loved it so much, they created Milly her very own shepherd hut kennel.
Jennifer and John live on a farm in Aust, close to the original Severn Bridge, with Milly, 10. Milly's shepherd hut kennel came about after the couple had completed their own self-build shepherd hut.
Jennifer explains: ‘We visited Blackdown Shepherd Huts to collect the sofa bed we'd ordered and John mentioned to the team that his next project would be a hut for Milly. John was offered a piece of curved roofing for free and Milly's kennel project went from there. Milly now has her own little shepherd hut as a kennel and she adores it.'
Both shepherd huts are located in Jennifer and John's garden and have become a popular landmark in the area. Jennifer says: ‘A public footpath runs through our farm and we often see people taking pictures and hear their comments about the huts.
‘The people from the village love sitting in the main hut and various groups use it for tea breaks and lunches. Everyone is surprised how spacious the main hut is - it's 14 foot long and very well insulated, so it can be used all year round. Milly loves to retire to her hut to cool off, or at the end of a very busy day. She's a lucky dog!'
Blackdown Shepherd Huts have seen a recent rise in demand for their bespoke and self-build shepherd huts for a range of purposes. From extra guest bedrooms, reading dens and writing rooms, shooting lodges and stargazing abodes, the shepherd hut is fast becoming the new farm and home addition. Will Vickery, who runs Blackdown Shepherd Huts, says: ‘The shepherd hut's year-round appeal means that it makes for a very appealing extra space. It's so lovely that our huts inspired a luxury dog kennel for Milly. It might be a new way forward for us!‘
